A pretty interesting interview I found with Georges Simenon: http://www.parisreview.com/viewinterview.php/prmMID/5020
“Writing is considered a profession, and I don’t think it is a
profession. I think that everyone who does not need to be a writer,
who thinks he can do something else, ought to do something else.
Writing is not a profession but a vocation of unhappiness. I don’t
think an artist can ever be happy.”

“…a vocation of unhappiness. I don’t think an artist can ever be happy.”
Indeed.
It is an emotional see-saw for sure…I’m happy when I’m working on a book or a painting…I’m miserable when I’m working on something that isn’t going well…when I walk away from it, I’m unhappy when I’m not working on it, and immediately cheered up once I return to the source of misery and over joyed when I make it work (I’ll even do a happy dance)…being an artist of any kind isn’t for the faint of heart, I learned that early on once I realized I had no choice but to follow my bliss.
Excellent article, thanks for sharing.
